darrobe, itself from the Spanish arroba which designated a unit of weight, in turn derived from the Arabic ar roub, "the quarter" because this unit of weight represented the quarter of a unit of about fifty kilos. The popular etymology claiming that this word is the contraction of "a rond bas de casse" is baseless.
