common nounproper noun

Syllable Decomposition

amour

amur (Strasbourg Oaths). From the Latin amorem, accusative of amor ('love'). Philologically speaking, the form amour is not in line with the historical phonetics of French, as one would expect ameur. It likely comes from dialects in -ou, and more probably from Champagne, as a significant part of courtly literature was written in this dialect. The hypothesis of an Occitanism, through the troubadours, is also put forward.
