alcool
common noun
Syllable Decomposition
alcoolwith the initial meaning of 'very fine powder [of antimony]', from the Spanish alcohol (antimony) attested from 1278 see al- and kohl for the etymons of the Spanish word which explains the variant alcohol and the obsolete senses of 'stibine, very fine powder'. The Arabic كحول, (al) khul in the sense of 'alcohol' is a loan from the European languages. The evolution of alcohol from the sense of 'very fine and pure element' to that of 'essence obtained by distillation, spirit-of-wine' would be due to Paracelsus.
