Alcantara is the name of a city in Spain whose name means the bridge. Alcantara or Alcantera, in late Latin, means "bridge"; this word comes from the Arabic القنطرة al-qanṭarah, of the same meaning, derived from the root qanṭara: "to bend, to form an arch".
