aiglefin

egreffin (Valaisian cook) ; (first third of the 14th century) esclefin ; (1554) eglefin (Rondelet, about marine fish). Borrowed from Dutch schelvisch which gives esclevis attested around 1340, then esclefin, deformed into eglefin, aiglefin and aigrefin, probably due to the external appearance of the fish, characterized by a very elongated body and a huge mouth, a sign of great voracity, see eagle.
