acheter
verb
Syllable Decomposition
acheterfrom the Old French achater, from the Vulgar Latin accaptare, reinforcement with ad- of captare "to try to take, to seize, to capture", frequentative of capĕre, "to take". Another hypothesis suggests a reworking, under the influence of captare, of the Classical Latin acceptare, doublet of accipĕre, with the meaning of "to take to oneself", hence "to obtain, to acquire", hence "to buy" (cf. emĕre which originally meant "to take" and had specialized in the sense of "to buy" since the literary period).
