according to one explanation, the inventor of gas lighting, Philippe Lebon, promoted and developed his invention in Paris in the 1820s. In the 1830s, the magnificent lighting of Paris, particularly its commercial arcades, fascinated Europeans. Londoners nicknamed Paris 'City of Lights', a periphrasis translated into French as Ville Lumière.
