from Latin gaudiacum composed of gaudius, a man's name derived from gaudium ('joy') with the suffix -acum see -ac and -y. In the 6th century, Gregory of Tours named the territory of Joué-lès-Tours gaudiacus or jocundiacensis domus. gaudiacum also gives the variants gouy, gaujac, gaugeac, gaujacq, joué.
