Syllable Decomposition
Hébreufrom Latin hebraeus, from the name of Heber, great-grandson of Shem. According to Renan, Semitic Languages, p. 29, 1st edition, it comes from Heber, 'passage', and Hebrew means 'those from beyond the river', in memory of the time when part of the Semitic population lived on this side of the Euphrates, and part beyond.
