Chouans

from the nickname of Jean Cottereau, known as Jean Chouan, one of the main leaders of the insurgents in the west against the French Revolution; his brothers, Pierre, François, and René, and himself were smugglers in the Laval region and were so named because they imitated the cry of the tawny owl (see this word for the etymon of chouan) as a rallying sign.
