Cantal

from the Occitan cantal, which has, as dialectal variants, cantau, chantal, chantau. Further back, a Gaulish toponym related to the Breton kant ('circle'), to the Latin canthus ('circle') due to the rounded shape of the summit of Plomb du Cantal which gives its name to the massif, then to the department.
