Aire-sur-la-Lys

The villa mentioned in 847 near the current town was originally called 'aria'; this toponym became 'aire' over the centuries through phonetic transformation (in Dutch: ariën). The toponym 'aire' was complemented by the name of the main river that flows through the town.
