derived from the Gaulish name in Latin civitas aturensium (« city of the aturens »), the Roman name being vicus julii, taken up in the form aturensis (city bathed by the Adour) becoming aturæ, the Latin form of the Adour being aturrus itself derived from the Basque aturri possibly derived from the Basque iturri (« source »). transformation of aturæ into Gascon in the form atra, aira, Frenchified into aire.
