from the ancient Greek ἀκαδημία, from the name of Academus, a citizen of Athens. A public promenade located on the banks of the Cephisus, six stadia from Athens, on the road to Teia. Academus, a famous hero, had donated it to his homeland on the condition that a gymnasium be built there. Plato, who owned a small temple of the Muses nearby, opened a school of philosophy there which took the name Academy.
